Tonality: Unconscious Understanding

ignatiustobias

Ive recently just had my music class where I learned an interesting thing about tonality. To express the many emotions they were having, musical composers of the romantic era directed towards "tonality over modality," or at least thats what my teacher said. Without going into musical history, Im just gonna say this: Tones speak everything. Use it rightly and the right message will be told in the right way. Use it wrong and you can—well—send mixed messages.

Lets say as an example you want to teach your children to get rid of some bad habits.

"Please put the trash where its supposed to be." A pretty neutral sentence isn't it?

Now imagine this: "Please! Put the Trash Where its Supposed to Be."

Obviously we need to use your imagination, but can you tell the difference between those two sentences? One feels more passive while the other one just sounds like your scolding them. It is important to keep your order clearly defined, but its also important to keep the strictness down if its the first two or three times.

Using the 1st option, your children will view that command in a calm mind and think "Oh yeah, I just keep forgetting." With positive enforcement, this command will make a lasting effect and stay on their heads. Plus, this sentence just makes us (as the children) realise that we were wrong.

Now going with the 2nd option? Your child will more of a "Jeez, calm down." or an "Alright alright, I'll do it." Instead of them reflecting upon themselves they instead respond in a cookie cutter response and will easily dismiss the potential lesson they could have learned.

Teaching any of your children a good lesson requires good use of tonality. Use it correctly, and your children will accept, inspect, and reflect on their actions.
